Welcome to Space and Extreme Environments! This engaging unit study kit has been created to fully align with many of the Big Ideas, content strands, and competencies of the BC Sixth Grade Science Curriculum. It has been written directly for students, marking an exciting step forward in learning independence for many of our HCOS learners. Students will work through seven distinct sections: Engage, Explore, Explain, Apply, Share, Reflect, and Extend. Each section represents a "step" in the "stairs" of learning, guiding students through a comprehensive educational journey. Kit Section Overview: Engage: Students will be introduced to key concepts and themes, sparking their curiosity and setting the stage for deeper exploration. Explore: Learners will dive into hands-on activities, encouraging critical and creative thinking, and helping them to build knowledge about the content and competencies being explored in the kit. Explain: This section focuses on hands-on activities and experimentation as students build on the knowledge gained in the Explore section and start seeking explanation for how and why the universe/world works the way it does. Apply: Here, students will synthesise their knowledge in a final project (with lots of room for student choice and creativity), showcasing their learning and understanding. Share: Learners will present their projects and showcase what they have created to friends, family, and their support teacher. Reflect: Students will practise self-assessment and reflection as they think about their learning, summarize key takeaways, and assess their own effort throughout the kit. Extend: This section encourages further exploration and application of the concepts learned and provides opportunities for more deep learning. Learning Journey: Students will start by exploring important vocabulary and scientific terminology in their glossary. They will view images and begin thinking deeply about the themes of space and extreme environments, creating their own crash course introduction to each of the extreme environments they will explore. Throughout the kit, students will learn about: The features of different extreme environments The locations of extreme environments How people explore and survive in extreme environments Features of our solar system The relationship between the earth and the rest of the solar system Canadian exploration technologies Indigenous perspectives on space and the solar system Much more!
